Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree with Afrikaans as a teaching subject, or a relevant undergraduate degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Afrikaans specialisation. The Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA) and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture require all teachers to be registered with the Teaching Council of Namibia (TCN).

Daily duties include preparing and delivering lessons aligned with the Namibian National Curriculum (NCC), assessing learners using CAPS-aligned tools, and participating in school-based assessments and learner support programmes. Teachers also attend staff meetings, engage in co-curricular activities like language clubs, and collaborate with colleagues on multilingual teaching strategies common in Namibia’s diverse classrooms.

Namibian schools emphasise respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and community engagement — teachers are often expected to participate in parent-teacher associations and school development committees. Multilingual sensitivity is essential, as educators regularly navigate interactions among learners speaking Oshiwambo, Otjiherero, English, Afrikaans, and other local languages in both urban and rural settings.

Teachers can advance to roles such as Senior Teacher, Head of Department (Afrikaans), or School-Based Support Officer through experience, further study (e.g., Honours or Master’s in Education), and TCN-accredited leadership training. Some transition into curriculum advisory roles with the Ministry or join institutions like the University of Namibia’s School of Education as lecturers or resource developers.

Government-employed teachers receive 30 days annual leave, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave per the Labour Act, and contribute to the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF). Private schools vary, but accredited institutions typically offer medical aid schemes, at least 22 days’ annual leave, and may provide GIPF or private pension options depending on employment terms.
