LECTURER IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE – University of Namibia

Applicants usually need a Master’s degree in Environmental Science or a closely related field, with a PhD strongly preferred for permanent academic positions. The University of Namibia also requires registration with the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA) and may consider relevant professional experience, such as environmental impact assessment work in Namibia.

Daily duties include delivering lectures and practicals on topics like climate change adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and water resource management—often incorporating local Namibian case studies. Lecturers also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, mark assessments, and contribute to curriculum development aligned with national priorities like Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Strategy.

UNAM values collegiality, respect for senior academics, and responsiveness to community engagement—especially in rural or semi-arid regions where fieldwork is common. Punctuality and formal communication are expected, but flexibility around deadlines may occur during national events or when coordinating with government partners like the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

Lecturers can progress from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor based on teaching excellence, research output (including publications in Southern African journals), and service to UNAM and national environmental policy. Many also take on leadership roles such as Head of Department or contribute to national advisory bodies like the Namibian Environmental Assessment Board.

UNAM staff are covered by the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and receive 30 working days of annual leave plus public holidays.
