Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications are typically expected for a Senior Travel Consultant – After‑Hours Services role in Namibia?
Employers usually look for a diploma or degree in travel and tourism, hospitality, or a related field, plus relevant certifications such as IATA/UFTAA or a GDS (Amadeus, Sabre, Galileo) qualification. Several years of experience in travel consultancy, especially handling after‑hours or emergency bookings, is also commonly required.
What are the typical day‑to‑day responsibilities of this position?
The role involves managing client travel requests outside regular office hours, making and amending bookings via GDS systems, providing visa and travel advice, and ensuring compliance with company policies. You will also handle escalations, maintain accurate records, and liaise with suppliers to resolve issues promptly.
How does the local work culture in Namibia influence expectations for this role?
Namibian workplaces value punctuality, clear communication, and a respectful attitude toward both colleagues and clients, often expecting fluency in English and optionally Afrikaans or local languages. Team collaboration is important, but the after‑hours nature of the job also requires self‑motivation and the ability to work independently during evenings or weekends.
What realistic career progression paths exist for someone in this role?
With strong performance, a Senior Travel Consultant can advance to a Team Leader or Supervisor position overseeing a group of consultants, or move into broader operations management. Some professionals also transition into sales, product development, or corporate travel management roles within the industry.
What benefits are commonly offered to travel consultants in Namibia?
Typical benefits include paid annual leave (often around 21 days per year), sick leave, maternity/paternity leave, employer contributions to a medical aid scheme, and participation in a pension or provident fund. Some companies may also provide travel discounts or familiarization trips as part of the package.
How should a job seeker apply for this role and what do Namibian employers typically look for in candidates?
Applications are usually submitted online via company websites, recruitment portals, or through local recruitment agencies, accompanied by a tailored CV and a concise cover letter highlighting relevant travel consultancy experience and after‑hours availability. Employers prioritize proven customer‑service skills, proficiency with GDS platforms, flexibility to work shifts, and strong interpersonal abilities.
