You typically need a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health Sciences or equivalent from a recognized Namibian institution like UNAM or NUST. Registration with the Namibia Health Professions Council is mandatory. Some employers may require 1-2 years of relevant work experience for Grade 9 level.

You will conduct health inspections of hospital facilities, monitor waste management and infection control protocols, and ensure compliance with Namibian public health regulations. The role involves investigating disease outbreaks, training staff on hygiene standards, and preparing reports for hospital management. You may also liaise with the Ministry of Health and Social Services on environmental health matters.

Progression typically follows government grading scales from Grade 9 upward to senior and chief practitioner levels. With experience and additional qualifications, you can move into supervisory roles, regional coordinator positions, or specialize in areas like occupational health or food safety. Some practitioners transition into policy development with the Ministry of Health or academic positions at training institutions.

Public sector positions usually include membership in the Government Institutions Pension Fund, medical aid contributions, and annual leave of 24-30 days depending on years of service. You may also receive housing or transport allowances, and opportunities for continuous professional development. Specific benefits vary by employer and are outlined in Public Service Act regulations.

Employers prioritize candidates with strong knowledge of Namibian health legislation and demonstrated practical experience in healthcare settings. Communication skills in English and local languages are valued for community engagement work. Membership in professional bodies and a valid driver's license are often advantageous for fieldwork requirements.

Applications are typically submitted through the Ministry of Health and Social Services or Office of the Prime Minister recruitment portals, or directly to hospital management as advertised in local newspapers. You must submit certified copies of qualifications, registration certificates, and a detailed CV. Shortlisted candidates usually undergo interviews and may be required to complete practical assessments.
