Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and registrations do I need to apply for an Occupational Therapist Grade 7 position at a Namibian public hospital?

You need a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from a recognized institution, plus registration with the Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCNA). Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the Namibia Qualifications Authority. Prior clinical experience in a hospital setting is typically preferred for Grade 7 level.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an Occupational Therapist at Windhoek Central Hospital?

You will assess and treat patients with physical, mental, or developmental conditions to help them regain daily living skills. This includes designing rehabilitation programs, prescribing adaptive equipment, and collaborating with doctors, nurses, and social workers. Documentation and case management are also essential parts of the role.

How does the work culture and environment differ in Namibian public hospitals compared to private practice?

Public hospitals like Windhoek Central serve diverse populations with limited resources, requiring flexibility and resilience. Hierarchical structures are common, with senior medical officers guiding treatment decisions. Teamwork across departments is essential due to high patient volumes and staff shortages.

What career progression opportunities exist for Occupational Therapists in Namibia's public health sector?

You can advance through graded levels from Grade 7 to senior and principal therapist positions based on experience and further qualifications. Specializing in areas like pediatrics, neurology, or mental health opens additional pathways. Some therapists move into management, policy development, or academic roles at institutions like UNAM.

What benefits typically come with a Grade 7 Occupational Therapist position in Namibia's public service?

Public service positions generally include pension contributions through the Government Institutions Pension Fund, medical aid options, and annual leave entitlements. Specific benefits vary by employer and are outlined in Public Service Commission regulations. Housing and transport allowances may apply depending on the appointment terms.

How should I apply for this position, and what do Namibian public health employers prioritize in candidates?

Applications are typically submitted through the Ministry of Health and Social Services or Office of the Prime Minister portals, requiring certified documents and HPCNA registration proof. Employers prioritize clinical competence, adaptability to resource-limited settings, and commitment to serving underserved communities. Strong references from supervisors and demonstrated teamwork skills strengthen your application.
