SPECIALIST GRADE 3

You usually need a relevant bachelor's degree in medicine, nursing, or a specialized health field, plus professional registration with the Health Professions Council of Namibia. Many employers also require 3–5 years of post-qualification experience and sometimes a postgraduate diploma or master's in your specialty area.

You will typically provide advanced clinical care, supervise junior medical staff, and contribute to departmental planning and quality improvement. The role often includes patient consultations, specialized procedures, mentoring interns or registrars, and participating in hospital committees or outreach programs.

Public sector roles, such as at Ministry of Health and Social Services facilities, emphasize serving underserved populations with heavier caseloads and resource constraints. Private hospitals like those in Windhoek often expect faster patient turnover, stronger business awareness, and may offer more structured hours but higher performance pressure.

Progression typically leads to Specialist Grade 2 and then Grade 1, followed by roles such as Senior Specialist, Head of Department, or Hospital Superintendent. Some professionals also move into academic positions at the University of Namibia, health policy advisory roles, or establish private specialist practices.
