You must hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Secondary Education with Mathematics as a teaching subject, or a relevant undergraduate degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA). Registration with the Teaching Council of Namibia (TCN) is mandatory before employment in public or accredited private schools.

Your day usually includes preparing and delivering lessons aligned with the Namibian National Curriculum (NCC) for Grades 8–10, marking assignments and tests, attending staff and departmental meetings, and participating in learner support activities such as remedial classes or maths clubs. You’ll also be expected to maintain learner records and contribute to school-based assessments as required by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture (MEAC).

Namibian schools value respect for authority, punctuality, and strong community engagement — teachers are often expected to attend parent-teacher meetings, school events, and outreach activities in rural or peri-urban settings. Dress code tends to be formal or semi-formal, and collaboration with colleagues and adherence to MEAC policies on learner discipline and inclusive education are non-negotiable expectations.

With experience and further study (e.g., Honours or Master’s in Education), you can progress to roles such as Head of Department (Mathematics), Senior Teacher, or School-Based Support Officer with the MEAC. Some move into curriculum development, teacher training at colleges like UNAM’s School of Education, or leadership pathways like Deputy Principal after completing the Namibian School Leadership Programme (NSLP).

Public school teachers receive 30 days’ annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per the Namibian Labour Act and Public Service Commission regulations; medical aid and pension contributions are provided through the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF). Private schools vary but typically offer at least statutory leave and may include medical aid — always confirm coverage details during hiring.

Apply via official channels: the Ministry of Education’s recruitment portal for public schools, or directly to private/independent schools using CVs, TCN registration proof, academic transcripts, and certified ID copies. Employers prioritise TCN registration, classroom experience (especially with NCC-aligned lesson delivery), evidence of learner-centred pedagogy, and demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development through workshops or INSET programmes.
