You must hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Natural Sciences or Physical Sciences, or a relevant undergraduate degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Physical Science specialisation, accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA). Registration with the Teaching Council of Namibia (TCN) is mandatory before employment in public or accredited private schools.

Your day includes preparing and delivering lessons aligned with the Namibian National Curriculum (NCC) for Grades 8–10, marking practical assignments and theory tests, and supervising laboratory activities using available local resources. You’ll also attend staff meetings, participate in learner support programmes like remedial classes, and engage in school-based assessment (SBA) as required by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture.

Namibian schools emphasise respect for authority, punctuality, and strong community engagement — teachers often interact closely with parents and local stakeholders, especially in rural areas. Dress code is formal or semi-formal, and adherence to national education policies, including multilingual instruction where appropriate (e.g., using Afrikaans or English as LoLT), is expected across both public and private institutions.

With experience and further study (e.g., Honours or Master’s in Science Education), you can advance to roles such as Head of Department, Senior Teacher, or Curriculum Advisor within regional education offices. Some move into teacher training at institutions like the University of Namibia’s College of Education or join the Namibian National Commission for UNESCO in science education initiatives.

Public school teachers receive 25 days annual leave, sick leave, maternity/paternity leave per the Labour Act, and access to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and state medical aid schemes. Private schools vary but typically offer at least 20 days’ leave, basic medical aid contributions, and may include housing or transport allowances depending on institutional policy and location.
