How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Drill Rig Assistant at a Namibian mining company?
Most employers require a Grade 12 certificate with passes in Mathematics and Science. You will also need a valid Namibian driver's license and completion of a Drill Rig Assistant course accredited by the Mining Qualifications Authority or Namibian Training Authority. First aid certification and a medical fitness certificate are typically mandatory before starting work.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Drill Rig Assistant?
You will assist the Drill Rig Operator in setting up and dismantling drilling equipment, handling drill rods and casings, and maintaining accurate drill logs. Daily tasks include cleaning the work area, lubricating machinery, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols on site. Physical stamina is essential as the role involves heavy lifting and working in challenging underground or surface conditions.
How does the work culture and shift system typically operate in Namibian mining?
Namibian mining operations commonly use rotational shift systems, often two weeks on and one week off, especially for remote sites like those in the Erongo or //Karas regions. Accommodation and meals are usually provided in mining camps during your rotation. Punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and strict adherence to safety standards are deeply valued in Namibian mining culture.
What career progression opportunities exist for a Drill Rig Assistant?
With experience and additional training, you can advance to Drill Rig Operator, then to Senior Driller or Drill Supervisor. Many Namibian mining companies support further education through the Namibian University of Science and Technology or specialized training providers. Some assistants transition into roles in blasting, mine planning, or safety coordination with the right certifications.
What benefits are typically included in full-time mining positions in Namibia?
Standard benefits usually include medical aid coverage, pension contributions through the Social Security Commission or private schemes, and paid annual leave as mandated by the Namibian Labour Act. Remote site workers often receive housing allowances or camp accommodation, transport to site, and subsistence allowances. Specific benefits vary by employer and are typically outlined in your employment contract.
How should I apply for a Drill Rig Assistant position, and what do Namibian employers prioritize?
Submit your application through the company's official careers portal or email, including a detailed CV, certified copies of qualifications, and your Namibian-registered driver's license. Employers prioritize candidates with prior mining experience, strong safety awareness, and willingness to work in remote locations. Highlight any practical mechanical skills and your ability to work effectively in diverse teams.
