Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications are typically required for a General Manager in Travel & Tourism in Namibia?
A bachelor’s degree in Tourism Management, Business Administration, or Hospitality is commonly expected, often supplemented by industry-recognised certifications such as those from the Namibian Tourism Board (NTB) or CTH. Relevant experience in Namibian tourism operations — especially with inbound safari logistics, lodge partnerships, or air charter coordination — carries strong weight with employers like Timelegend Air Services.
What does a typical day look like for a General Manager in this sector in Namibia?
You’ll oversee daily operations including flight coordination with regional airstrips, managing relationships with lodges and tour operators across regions like Etosha or the Caprivi, and ensuring compliance with Namibian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and NTB regulations. Team briefings, client service escalation, and real-time response to weather or logistical disruptions — common in remote areas — form core responsibilities.
How does Namibian work culture influence expectations for leadership in this role?
Respect for hierarchy and relationship-based decision-making are valued, especially when engaging with communal landowners, conservancy committees, or government stakeholders. Punctuality is important, but flexibility is expected during peak season (June–October) or when coordinating across vast distances with limited infrastructure.
What realistic career progression paths exist after serving as a General Manager in Namibian travel and tourism?
Many progress into regional director roles with multinational tour operators or transition into advisory positions with the NTB or Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism. Others leverage local expertise to launch niche safari or aviation-linked ventures, supported by Namibia’s SME development incentives and tourism enterprise programmes.
What benefits are typically offered to full-time General Managers in this sector in Namibia?
Standard benefits include 22–30 days annual leave (aligned with Namibian Labour Act), medical aid through providers like NAMFISA-registered schemes, and pension contributions under the Namibian Pension Funds Act. Some employers also offer travel allowances or discounted domestic flights — particularly relevant for air services-linked roles.
How should I apply, and what do Namibian employers specifically look for in candidates for this role?
Apply directly via the company’s website or verified LinkedIn page, attaching a Namibian CV with clear evidence of NTB registration (if applicable), NCAA liaison experience, and references from local tourism stakeholders. Employers prioritise proven ability to navigate Namibia’s regulatory landscape, multilingual communication (especially English and local languages like Oshiwambo or Afrikaans), and hands-on crisis management in remote settings.
