How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Mechanical Lifting Equipment Operator (CAT 3 × 1) at NAMPORT?
You typically need a Grade 10 certificate as a minimum, plus a valid LME (Lifting Machinery Equipment) operator certificate for Category 3 machinery issued by an accredited Namibian training provider. NAMPORT may also require a medical fitness certificate and security clearance due to the port environment.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
You will operate forklifts, reach stackers, or other Category 3 equipment to move containers and cargo within the port terminal. Daily tasks include conducting pre-operational safety checks, loading and unloading vessels, maintaining equipment logs, and coordinating with stevedores and logistics teams.
How does the work culture and schedule typically look at Namibian ports?
Port operations run 24/7, so expect shift work including nights, weekends, and public holidays on a rotational basis. Namibian port employers emphasize strict safety compliance, punctuality, and teamwork in a multicultural environment where English is the working language.
What career progression opportunities exist for LME operators in Namibia?
With experience, you can advance to senior operator, supervisor, or training assessor roles, or cross-train on heavier Category 4 equipment like ship-to-shore cranes. Some operators transition into logistics coordination, safety officer positions, or pursue further qualifications to become maintenance technicians.
What benefits are typically offered for full-time equipment operator roles in Namibia?
Standard benefits usually include annual leave of 20-24 days, paid sick leave, and contributions to the Social Security Commission. Many established employers also provide medical aid subsidies, pension fund contributions, and overtime pay for shift work.
How should I apply for this role and what do Namibian employers like NAMPORT look for in candidates?
Apply through official channels such as the NAMPORT careers portal or newspaper advertisements, submitting certified copies of your qualifications, LME certificate, and ID. Employers prioritize candidates with clean safety records, reliable references, and demonstrated experience in high-volume cargo handling environments.
