How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Mechanical Lifting Equipment Operator (CAT 4 × 3) at NAMPORT?
You typically need a Grade 10 certificate as a minimum, plus a valid Namibian driver's license. Most importantly, you must complete accredited lifting equipment operator training through institutions like the Namibian Training Authority (NTA) or recognized providers, and obtain the specific CAT 4 × 3 certification for operating heavy lifting machinery.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
You will operate and maintain mechanical lifting equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and container handlers to move cargo at the port. Daily tasks include conducting pre-operational safety inspections, loading and unloading containers, coordinating with ground crews, and completing equipment logs.
How does the work culture and environment differ at Namibian ports compared to other workplaces?
Port operations in Namibia run on strict schedules with shift work including nights and weekends, as cargo vessels operate around the clock. Safety is paramount due to the hazardous nature of heavy machinery and maritime operations, so adherence to protocols and teamwork under pressure are highly valued.
What career progression opportunities exist for lifting equipment operators in Namibia's logistics sector?
With experience, you can advance to senior operator, supervisor, or training instructor roles. Further certifications in specialized equipment or logistics management can open paths to operations management positions within NAMPORT or private logistics companies.
What benefits are typically offered for full-time equipment operator positions in Namibia?
Benefits usually include annual leave as per Namibian Labour Act, medical aid contributions, and pension or provident fund membership. Some employers also provide shift allowances, protective clothing, and opportunities for ongoing skills development.
How should I apply for this role, and what do Namibian employers like NAMPORT look for in candidates?
Apply through official channels such as the NAMPORT careers portal or advertised positions in Namibian newspapers. Employers prioritize candidates with valid certifications, clean safety records, physical fitness, reliability, and willingness to work flexible hours in demanding conditions.
