CARNIVORE KEEPER – CHEETAH CONSERVATION FUND(CCF)
CCF is currently seeking a full-time CARNIVORE KEEPER for its cheetah rehabilitation facilities in
Hargeisa, Somaliland. The facilities provide housing and veterinary care for cheetah cubs
confiscated by government authorities from the illegal wildlife trade. Position cares for
cheetahs housed in CCF facilities in Hargeisa and assists with the coordination of environmental
education initiatives that are presently in development. Duties will include but are not limited
to all aspects of the daily management of the cheetahs including cleaning, feeding, enrichment,
detailed record keeping, behavioral observations, diet preparation, general maintenance,
husbandry training, and assisting with veterinary care.
Main duties
Animal Management
- Management and supervision of the animal caretaker staff
- Evaluation and further development of cheetah management protocols, in cooperation with network of international experts
- Cooperation with Somaliland government authorities, to coordinate the confiscation and handover of animals intercepted from the illegal wildlife trade
- Coordinate the movement of animals in CCF facilities from the point of intake
- Interact with local stakeholders, such as project partners, interns, professional
- associations and visiting guests of the Somaliland government
- Lead and participate in meetings about cheetah care and movement
- Develop and implement new zoological strategies and concepts relevant to cheetah
- Control and develop plans relating to animal safety and welfare; present to team
- Record-keeping and photo documentation of the animals in the project
- Other duties assigned by the Project Director or Project Manager
Environmental Education
- Develop and help implement educational concepts focusing on animal and environmental protection for local audiences
- Coordinate and implement local education initiatives to promote project objectives, i.e. – the Somaliland celebration of International Cheetah Day, December 4th
- Assist in the recruitment of local interns and volunteers to help deploy educational programs
- Help develop environmental education networks by collaborating with project partners, interns, professional associations and the Somaliland government
Requirements
- Degree in biology (majoring in zoology), environmental education, animal management or a comparable subject
- 3-5 years of experience in the care of captive large carnivores, preferably big cat species
- Calm demeanor, with strong leadership and communications skills
- Experience in delivering environmental and wildlife education programs
- Strong verbal communication skills, can make public presentations to local stakeholders
- Driver’s license with good driving record and ability to operate vehicles with manual transmission
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; must be fluent in written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications
- On the ground experience working with a conservation program in Africa
- Experience working with felids in a rehabilitation setting is a plus
- Willingness to help develop, implement and coordinate educational concepts to address threats including illegal wildlife trade and farmer-carnivore conflict in an emerging society
