Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications are typically required to become a Travelling Sales Representative for a roofing company like Roofmore in Namibia?
A Grade 12 certificate is usually the minimum requirement, with preference given to candidates who have completed sales, business, or construction-related short courses from Namibian institutions like NAMCOL or IUM. Valid Namibian driver’s licence (Code 08 or higher) is essential due to frequent travel across regions, and basic knowledge of roofing materials or building terminology is advantageous but not mandatory.
What does a typical day look like for a Travelling Sales Representative in Namibia’s roofing industry?
The role involves visiting contractors, builders, hardware stores, and homeowners across multiple regions — often starting early to cover long distances on Namibia’s gravel and tarred roads. Daily tasks include demonstrating products, quoting jobs, processing orders, collecting feedback, and submitting digital or paper-based reports to the regional office using mobile data or offline tools where network coverage is limited.
How does Namibia’s local work culture affect expectations for this role, especially regarding client relationships and communication?
Relationship-building is highly valued; punctuality, respect for elders and authority, and face-to-face engagement are expected, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where trust precedes transactions. Communication should be clear, bilingual where possible (English plus Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, or Otjiherero), and adapted to local decision-making timelines, which may involve consulting family or community stakeholders before committing to purchases.
What realistic career progression paths exist for a Travelling Sales Representative in Namibia’s building materials sector?
With consistent performance and product knowledge, representatives may advance to Senior Sales Representative, Regional Sales Coordinator, or Branch Supervisor roles — often requiring internal assessments and mentorship through employer-led development programmes. Some transition into training, procurement, or start small distribution businesses supported by industry networks like the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI).
What standard employee benefits can I expect in this role, and how do they align with Namibian labour law?
Employers typically provide at least 22 days’ annual leave, sick leave as per the Labour Act, and statutory contributions to the National Pension Fund (NPF); medical aid is common but not guaranteed and depends on company policy. Some offer vehicle allowances or fuel reimbursement instead of company cars, and overtime is regulated under the Namibian Labour Act — always confirm benefit details in writing before accepting an offer.
How should I apply for this role, and what do Namibian employers specifically look for during recruitment?
Applications are usually submitted via email or in person with a tailored CV highlighting sales experience, driving history, and regional familiarity — especially if you’ve worked in construction, hardware, or FMCG sectors in Namibia. Employers prioritise proven reliability (e.g., clean traffic record), self-motivation, resilience in remote conditions, and evidence of navigating Namibia’s diverse logistics and client environments.
