Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Surveyor in Namibia?
Most employers require a Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or Civil Engineering from a recognized institution like NUST or UNAM. Professional registration with the Namibia Professional Land Surveyors and Technical Surveyors Council (NPLSTSC) is typically required for senior roles. Additional certifications in GPS, GIS, or CAD software strengthen your competitiveness.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Surveyor at a construction and mining company?
Daily tasks include conducting topographic surveys, setting out construction works, monitoring mining excavations, and preparing accurate maps and reports. You will work extensively with total stations, GPS equipment, and drone technology on-site. Data processing and collaboration with engineers and project managers are also core responsibilities.
How does workplace culture and work-life balance look for Surveyors in Namibia?
Surveyors often work in remote site locations with rotational schedules, especially in mining regions like Erongo or Otjikoto. Namibian employers typically respect regulated working hours, though fieldwork may require early starts and occasional weekend work. Companies usually provide camp accommodation and transport for remote assignments.
What career progression opportunities exist for Surveyors in Namibia?
Entry-level Surveyors can advance to Senior Surveyor, Chief Surveyor, or Project Surveyor roles within five to ten years. Specialization in mining surveying, hydrographic surveying, or geospatial analysis opens additional pathways. Some professionals transition into project management, consulting, or establish private surveying practices.
What benefits should I expect as a full-time Surveyor in Namibia?
Standard benefits typically include annual leave of 21-24 days, medical aid contributions, and pension fund membership as required by Namibian labour law. Site-based roles often provide additional allowances for remote work, accommodation, and transport. Specific packages vary by employer and your level of experience.
How should I apply for Surveyor positions, and what do Namibian employers prioritize?
Submit applications through company websites, job portals like My Namibia or Careers Namibia, and professional networks. Employers prioritize practical field experience, proficiency with modern surveying equipment, and valid driver's licenses for remote site access. Highlight any mining or large infrastructure project exposure in your CV.
