Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Quantity Surveyor in Namibia?
Most employers require a Bachelor's degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field from a recognized institution such as NUST or UNAM. Professional registration with the Namibia Council for Architects and Quantity Surveyors (NCAQS) is highly valued and often essential for senior roles. Some positions may accept a National Diploma with substantial practical experience.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Quantity Surveyor at a Namibian construction firm?
You will prepare cost estimates, bills of quantities, and tender documents for construction projects across residential, commercial, and mining sectors. Daily tasks include monitoring project costs, valuing work done, processing payments to contractors, and advising on contractual matters. Site visits to project locations—sometimes in remote areas—are common to assess progress and verify quantities.
How does work culture and employer expectations differ for Quantity Surveyors in Namibia compared to other countries?
Namibian construction culture emphasizes personal relationships and respect for hierarchy, so building trust with clients, contractors, and colleagues is essential. Employers expect flexibility, as projects may face delays due to supply chain challenges or remote site logistics. Punctuality and adaptability are valued, and you may need to work extended hours during tender deadlines or project milestones.
What career progression opportunities exist for Quantity Surveyors in Namibia?
Entry-level surveyors typically advance to senior quantity surveyor or contracts manager roles within five to seven years with NCAQS registration. Further growth leads to positions such as commercial manager, project director, or establishing your own consultancy. Specializing in high-demand sectors like mining infrastructure or renewable energy can accelerate advancement.
What benefits are typically offered to Quantity Surveyors in Namibian companies?
Standard benefits usually include annual leave of 20-24 days, contributions to a pension or provident fund, and medical aid membership or subsidies. Some employers provide housing allowances for remote site work, travel reimbursements, and professional development support for NCAQS registration. Benefits vary significantly by employer size and project type.
How should I apply for Quantity Surveyor positions in Namibia, and what do employers prioritize?
Submit a concise CV highlighting relevant software skills such as CCS, WinQS, or Excel, along with certified copies of qualifications and proof of NCAQS registration or progress. Employers prioritize candidates with local project experience, strong cost control abilities, and demonstrated knowledge of Namibian building regulations and standard contract forms. Networking through industry bodies like the Namibia Institute of Quantity Surveyors can improve your visibility to hiring managers.
