How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications do I need to become a Mechanical Lifting Equipment Operator (Cat 4 × 3) at Namport?
You need a valid Namibian driver's license and a certified lifting equipment operator qualification accredited by the Namibia Training Authority (NTA) or relevant industry body. Category 4 × 3 typically covers mobile cranes and heavy lifting machinery, requiring both theoretical training and practical hours. Employers also require a medical fitness certificate and often prefer candidates with additional safety certifications like basic rigging or first aid.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
You will operate cranes, forklifts, and other mechanical lifting equipment to move cargo between ships, trucks, and storage areas at the port. Daily tasks include conducting pre-operational safety inspections, securing loads properly, maintaining equipment logs, and coordinating with signalers and ground crews. Strict adherence to Namport's safety protocols and international maritime standards is mandatory.
How is the work culture and what are the expectations for operators in Namibian ports?
Namibian port operations follow a structured, safety-first culture with shift work including nights, weekends, and public holidays due to 24/7 vessel schedules. Punctuality, teamwork, and clear communication are highly valued, with English being the primary workplace language. Operators are expected to respect hierarchical reporting lines and participate in regular safety drills and toolbox talks.
What career progression opportunities exist for lifting equipment operators in Namibia?
With experience, you can advance to senior operator, team leader, or supervisor roles overseeing multiple equipment types and crews. Further certifications in specialized equipment like ship-to-shore cranes or container handling can open doors to technical specialist positions. Some operators transition into safety officer, training instructor, or logistics coordination roles within Namport or private sector companies.
What benefits are typically offered for this position in Namibia?
Employers usually provide medical aid contributions, pension fund membership through Namibian regulated schemes, and annual leave in line with the Namibian Labour Act. Shift allowances and overtime pay are common given the irregular hours, and some companies offer housing allowances or transport subsidies. Specific benefits vary by employer and employment contract type.
How do I apply and what do Namibian employers look for in candidates?
Apply directly through Namport's official careers portal or recognized Namibian job platforms like Namijob or The Namibian newspaper listings. Employers prioritize certified operators with clean safety records, relevant experience in port or logistics environments, and strong references from previous supervisors. Demonstrating reliability, physical fitness, and willingness to work flexible shifts significantly improves your chances.
