LECTURER (BIOLOGY) – Ium

Applicants usually need a Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related field; a PhD is increasingly preferred, especially for permanent or senior roles. A teaching qualification such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent is often required or strongly recommended by Namibian institutions accredited by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA).

Daily duties include delivering lectures and practical laboratory sessions to undergraduate students, marking assignments and exams, and supervising student projects. Lecturers also participate in departmental meetings, curriculum development aligned with NQA standards, and community outreach activities common in Namibian higher education institutions.

Namibian academic workplaces emphasise respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and strong interpersonal engagement with students and colleagues, reflecting broader cultural values. There is also an expectation to contribute to national development goals — such as promoting STEM education in underserved communities — and to uphold the principles outlined in Namibia’s National Policy on Education and Training.

Lecturers can progress from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, then to Associate Professor and Professor, based on teaching excellence, research output, and service contributions recognised by NQA and institutional promotion criteria. Some also move into academic leadership roles such as Head of Department or Dean, or transition into national education advisory positions through bodies like the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) or the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture.

Permanent lecturers typically receive 22–30 days of annual leave, sick leave, and study leave, in line with the Namibian Labour Act and institutional policies. Medical aid and pension contributions (via the Government Employees Pension Fund or a private scheme) are standard for public and many private institutions, though coverage details depend on the employer’s specific employment contract.
