FINANCE OFFICER

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is usually mandatory, and many employers prefer candidates with ACCA, CIMA, or SAICA-recognised qualifications. Since Namibia follows IFRS and uses the Namibian Dollar, familiarity with local tax legislation (e.g., VAT, PAYE) and the Namibian Revenue Agency (NamRA) requirements is essential.

Daily tasks include processing payments, reconciling bank statements, preparing monthly financial reports, and supporting budget monitoring — often using accounting software like Pastel Partner or Sage 50, which are widely used locally. You’ll also liaise with departments on expense claims and assist with statutory submissions to NamRA and the Ministry of Finance, especially during month-end and year-end close cycles.

Namibian workplaces value respect for hierarchy and clear communication, so Finance Officers are expected to present findings professionally to both finance managers and non-finance stakeholders. Punctuality, integrity, and discretion are highly emphasised, particularly given the country’s strong focus on public accountability and anti-corruption frameworks like the Anti-Corruption Act of 2003.

With experience and further certification, Finance Officers commonly progress to Senior Finance Officer, Finance Manager, or Head of Finance — especially within NGOs, parastatals, or larger private firms. Some transition into internal audit, treasury, or compliance roles, often supported by professional development funded through employer partnerships with institutions like the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN).

Standard benefits include at least 20 days of annual leave, sick leave as per the Labour Act, and participation in a pension or provident fund — many employers contribute to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) or private schemes. Medical aid is common but not universal; when offered, it’s often through Namibian providers like NAMAF or Medshield, and may require employee co-contributions.
