POSITION : SECTION GEOPHYSICIST
UNIT MINERAL: RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
Debmarine Namibia requires the services of a Section Geophysicist, shore based, reporting to the Mineral Resources Manager. The incumbent is the geophysics discipline head, responsible for the overall technical leadership and direction of the geophysics discipline within Debmarine Namibia.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
• Responsible for coordinating of all Company geophysical data acquisition and interpretation activities.
• Reviews and performs QA/QC on all acquired geophysical datasets.
• Technical project work including stand-alone seismic interpretation projects using high resolution single and multi-channel seismic data, side scan sonar and bathymetry datasets.
• Conducts in-house 3D seismic interpretation and attribute analysis by integrating geological, sampling data parameters and geophysical datasets.
• Utilizes and integrates quantitative interpretation techniques such as seismic inversion and attribute analyses for geological and geotechnical ground characterization.
• Undertakes and actively support the company’s R & D portfolio with particular emphasis on the testing of new concepts and processes related to marine geophysics and seabed mapping.
• Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure geophysics discipline input during key projects technical gate reviews.
• Evaluates current practices and keep current on new developments in shallow marine geophysics and other related fields to identify improvement opportunities on current practices.
• Mentoring and coaching support on geophysics for all in-house geoscientists and provide oversight for all geophysical interpretation outputs while contributing to the development of geophysical skills in-house.
• Provides geophysical technical support as required across other departments and work collaboratively between teams to ensure that best practices, optimizations and innovations are consistently and efficiently applied.
KEY COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
• Good working knowledge of the 3 facets of marine geophysics: acquisition, processing and interpretation as well as the ways in which they interact and affect each other.
• Competency and practical experience in seismic data acquisition and processing, both single and multi-channel seismic data.
• Proficiency and awareness of bathymetry and side scan sonar data processing and interpretation.
• Working knowledge of specific geophysical data acquisition, processing and interpretation software (e.g Oasis Montaj/Sequent, IHS Kingdom, Petrel, ProMax etc) as well as Esri ArcGIS.
• Experience in seismic attribute analysis and the integration of geological, geophysical and geotechnical drilling parameters for ground characterization.
• Practical competencies in integrated, multi-disciplinary team work in exploration and resource development.
• Strong ability to assess complex geological problems and a strong understanding of regional geological processes in the marine and fluvial environment.
• Demonstrated experience and interest in the development and mentoring of specialist staff.
• Interest in novel and innovative technology development and implementation.
• Creative thinker with a desire to challenge the status quo and conventional thinking with the ability to implement new ideas, processes and technologies.
• Very strong computer skills and an ability to adapt quickly to new software.
• Strong data analytics, quantitative analyses and data integration skills with demonstrable experience.
• Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills. Ability to write high quality technical reports.
• Team player with an outgoing nature who can work on own initiative with the ability to communicate and interact effectively across a diverse team.
• Able to work under pressure, exercise discretion and judgement in job performance while meeting or exceeding expectations set by management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• MSc in Geophysics/Exploration Geophysics (BSc Hons in Geophysics may be considered with specific course work or experience in geophysics, marine geology and sedimentology).
• 5-7 years’ experience working as a Geophysicist specifically involved with aspects of high- resolution geophysical data acquisition, processing and interpretation.
• Experience in the use of software such as IHS Kingdom, Petrel or related packages for seismic interpretation and 3D modelling.
• Experience in the use of GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS or similar).
• Experience and awareness of marine geophysical methods and techniques.
• Knowledge of marine geology and sedimentology.
• Strong tertiary level mathematics and computing skills.
Preference will be given to Namibian citizens and designated persons as prescribed by the Namibian Affirmative Action Act.
