NYS is mandated to provide youth with opportunities for further studies and training to enhance their opportunities for employment. To achieve its mandate, the Service offers three (3) training programmes to the youth, namely National Service, Voluntary Service and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
National Service Training is a six (6) month voluntary training programme and on completion, recruits are either deployed on projects of national importance or enrolled in Skills Training at the Rietfontein Training Centre.
The National Youth Service Act, 2005 (Act No. 5 of 2006) provides that:
1. The recruitment of youth into the Service is done on voluntary basis (section 4)(2)(a); and
2. Recruitment into the Service does not create an employee and employer relationship. Therefore, the Labour Act, 11 of 2007 or any law governing relations between employers and employees does not apply to the recruits (section 13) (4).
