VETERINARY CLINICIAN / SENIOR CLINICIAN (EQUINE MEDICINE AND SURGERY)

Employers usually require a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or equivalent degree from a recognized university, with full registration with the Veterinary Council of Namibia. For a Senior Clinician position, a postgraduate qualification such as a Master's in Veterinary Medicine or board certification in equine medicine/surgery is often expected. Additional certifications in equine dentistry, anesthesia, or diagnostic imaging are advantageous.

Daily duties include clinical examinations, lameness evaluations, surgical procedures, and emergency call-outs for colic or trauma cases at racing stables and breeding farms. You will also perform reproductive work such as artificial insemination and foaling assistance, manage hospital inpatients, and maintain detailed records for the Veterinary Council. Outreach to remote farms is common given Namibia's dispersed equine population.

Namibian veterinary practices often emphasize flexibility and self-reliance due to smaller team sizes and vast geographic coverage areas. Employers expect clinicians to handle diverse species beyond equines when needed and to build strong relationships with farming communities. Punctuality is valued, but work-life balance can be challenging during breeding and racing seasons.

Progression typically moves from Junior Clinician to Senior Clinician, then to Head of Equine Services or Practice Director for those with business acumen. Some clinicians transition into academic roles at the University of Namibia or specialize further through international residencies. Others establish private equine-exclusive practices serving the thoroughbred and endurance racing sectors.

Standard packages usually include medical aid contributions, pension or provident fund arrangements, and annual leave of 15–25 days depending on seniority. Many employers provide a company vehicle or vehicle allowance for farm visits, professional development funding for CPD requirements, and emergency call-out allowances. Housing assistance may be offered for positions in remote areas.
