TECHNICAL SERVICES (GRADUATE INTERN) – Oniipa Town Council

You typically need a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field from a recognized Namibian institution or equivalent. Some councils may accept National Diploma holders with strong practical experience. Professional registration with the Engineering Council of Namibia (ECN) is advantageous but not always required at intern level.

You will assist with infrastructure inspections, project documentation, and basic engineering calculations under senior supervision. Tasks often include site visits to water, roads, or electrical installations, plus data collection for council reports. Expect to shadow engineers during community consultations and learn municipal by-law applications.

Town councils emphasize public service accountability and community-facing work over profit-driven timelines. Decision-making tends to be hierarchical with formal protocols, and you will interact frequently with elected councilors and residents. Punctuality and respect for chain of command are highly valued in this government-adjacent environment.

Benefits vary by employer but may include annual leave as per Namibian Labour Act, limited medical aid contributions, and pension fund enrollment after probation. Transport allowances for site visits are common. Housing allowances are rare for interns but may be negotiated in remote postings like Oniipa.

Successful interns may transition to permanent Assistant Engineer roles or Junior Technician positions within the same council. With experience, you can advance to Municipal Engineer, specialize in water infrastructure, or move to regional ministries like MAWLR. Professional registration with ECN significantly accelerates promotion prospects.

Employers prioritize candidates with strong academic records, valid driver's licenses, and demonstrated community engagement. Submit a detailed CV, certified academic transcripts, and a cover letter explaining your interest in public service through the council's advertised channels. Prepare for panel interviews assessing technical knowledge and your understanding of local government challenges.
