How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a Senior Programme Officer – Energy at the SADC Secretariat?
Typically you need a bachelor's or master's degree in energy engineering, electrical engineering, renewable energy, economics, or a related field. Postgraduate qualifications are often preferred for senior roles, along with several years of regional programme experience. Familiarity with SADC protocols and energy sector policies in Southern Africa is a strong advantage.
What are the day-to-day responsibilities of this role?
You would coordinate regional energy programmes, support member states with policy implementation, prepare technical reports, and organise stakeholder meetings and workshops. The role also involves monitoring project progress, managing consultant inputs, and liaising with partners such as power pools, development agencies, and government ministries.
What benefits can I expect in a role like this?
Regional organisation roles usually include medical aid contributions, pension or provident fund membership, and paid annual leave as per Namibian labour standards. Some positions offer housing or relocation allowances, especially if based outside your home country. Benefits vary by employer and contract type, so confirm details during the offer stage.
What career progression paths exist from this position?
Senior Programme Officers often advance to Principal Programme Officer, Head of Division, or Director-level roles within regional bodies. Experience gained here also opens doors to senior roles at national energy regulators, utilities, development banks, and international organisations. Building expertise in regional energy integration strengthens long-term prospects across Southern Africa.
How do I apply, and what do employers look for?
Applications typically go through the SADC Secretariat's official recruitment portal or advertised vacancy notices, requiring a CV, cover letter, certified qualifications, and references. Employers look for demonstrated regional experience, strong report-writing skills, and knowledge of energy policy frameworks. Tailor your application to show measurable achievements in previous energy programmes.
What is the work culture like in Namibia for this kind of professional role?
Workplaces in Namibia value professionalism, punctuality, and collaborative engagement across diverse cultural and language backgrounds. English is the primary working language, and consensus-driven decision-making is common in regional organisations. Networking through industry bodies like the Namibia Energy Institute or regional forums can help you integrate quickly.
