The incumbent will report to the Manager of the Laboratory and be accountable for:
ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Legal, safety, health, and environmental compliance as well as promoting a safety
culture, systems, and design in the area of responsibility.
• Lead by example by living the company purpose and values.
• Oversee laboratory work and analysis in the Metal Balance and Projects section
to ensure that the quality and quantity of work meet laboratory benchmarks.
• Ensure client expectations are met or exceeded by achieving set turn-around times
and client complaints are eliminated.
• Ensure the appropriate use of laboratory equipment and materials, by minimizing
the wastage of laboratory materials.
• Troubleshoot assay, method, and instruments/equipment accountable for when
issues arise.
• Conduct method validation of non-routine or new methods, new test work methods
to be developed in accordance with existing method validation procedures.
• Conduct analytical work on routine and special samples which require advanced
skill and more than normal attention by using available or developing new
analytical techniques.
• Conduct immediate investigations when abnormalities and problems are
encountered with analytical work.
• Ensure that all laboratory equipment are maintained through routine preventive
equipment maintenance and external equipment services.
• Arrange or facilitate technical training of laboratory staff on laboratory techniques
and instruments to ensure competence and maintain appropriate training records.
• Ensure that appropriated capital is utilized within the budget and allocated time frame.
• Address raised non-conformances for the section by identifying root causes and
implementing corrective actions.
• Ensure that the Quality Management System (QMS) is implemented and
maintained in conformance with the requirements of ISO 17025:2017.
• Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance practices that will enable
the laboratory to meet and exceed, desired quality standards in a cost-effective
fashion.
• Review analytical data with a high degree of accuracy and compliance and perform
statistical and trend analysis of laboratory results generated both internally &
externally.
• Coordinate and perform laboratory audits as an internal auditor on a routine
schedule or unannounced to ensure compliance to QMS and other relevant
procedures.
• Manage the performance of direct reports through performance plans.
• Provide leadership, mentor and coach direct reports on identified performance
gaps across the section by discussing these gaps and agreeing on the appropriate action
to be taken.
• Motivate team members to perform and contribute to the success of the business
by creating a culture of working together.
• Build and maintain a high-performing team and create an environment for optimal
performance.
• Manage relations with other colleagues and other internal stakeholders.
• Manage team costs (leave liability, overtime, PPE) and take corrective action
where required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• National Diploma / B-Tech in Analytical Chemistry / BSc Degree / BSc Honors
Degree in Chemistry.
• Minimum 5 years of working experience in a mining/metallurgical/smelter laboratory
of which 4 years should have been in a supervisory capacity.
• Experience in the use of a range of analytical instrumentation e.g. XRF, AAS, ICP-OES,
Carbon-Sulphur Analyzer (ELTRA and LECO), Metrohm Auto titrators etc.
• Experience in a range of analytical techniques e.g., sample preparation, wet
chemistry, titrimetric, gravimetric, Fire Assay, etc.
• Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Reports, method
development, method validations, statistical and trend analysis.
• Strong ability to work independently, under pressure, and meet tight deadlines.
• Ability to think and make sound decisions.
• Sound knowledge of chemistry and its applications.
• Knowledge and experience in ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard implementation and
maintenance.
• Experience in use of LABWARE Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS).
• Experience in implementing and maintaining Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
• Computer literate (Microsoft Office Package).
• Code B driver’s license.
