SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL METROLOGIST

You typically need a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related scientific field from a recognized institution such as UNAM or NUST. Specialized training in metrology through NQA or international bodies like NIST is highly advantageous. Professional registration with the Engineering Council of Namibia or relevant scientific associations strengthens your credentials.

You will calibrate and verify measurement instruments for industries such as mining, manufacturing, and energy sectors. Daily tasks include conducting laboratory tests, maintaining measurement standards, preparing calibration certificates, and ensuring compliance with Namibian national standards. You may also train staff on proper instrument use and troubleshoot measurement discrepancies.

Work culture emphasizes precision, documentation, and adherence to international standards like ISO/IEC 17025. Employers value reliability and attention to detail, with expectations of working both independently and in small technical teams. Punctuality and respect for hierarchical structures are important in both public sector and private industrial settings.

You can advance from technician to senior metrologist, then to laboratory manager or quality assurance director. Specializing in emerging areas like renewable energy metrology or pharmaceutical calibration opens additional pathways. Some professionals transition into consultancy, academic lecturing at polytechnics, or roles with the Namibia Standards Institution.

Benefits vary by employer but commonly include medical aid contributions, pension schemes through GIPF or private providers, and annual leave of 20-30 days. Larger mining and industrial firms may offer housing allowances, performance bonuses, and professional development funding. Public sector roles provide job security and structured benefit packages.
