Applicants must hold a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a relevant subject, plus registration with the Namibian Teaching Council (NTC). A Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is often preferred, and proof of NTC registration is mandatory before commencing employment.

Relief teachers cover scheduled classes when permanent staff are absent, following lesson plans left by the regular teacher and managing classroom behaviour in line with the school’s code of conduct. They may also supervise breaks, assist with assessments, and attend brief handover meetings with department heads or senior teachers.

Namibian schools value respect for authority, punctuality, and strong community engagement — teachers are often expected to participate in extracurricular activities and parent-teacher interactions. Hierarchical structures are common, and building trust through consistent professionalism and cultural sensitivity — especially regarding local languages and traditions — is essential.

Relief teaching experience can support applications for permanent posts, particularly if combined with continued professional development accredited by the NTC. Some educators transition into subject coordination, mentorship roles, or pursue leadership pathways such as Deputy Principal through the Ministry of Education’s Leadership Development Programme.

Full-time relief teachers are usually entitled to statutory leave (20–22 days annual leave), sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave as per the Namibian Labour Act. Medical aid and pension contributions depend on the employer’s policy and may be available if the post is contracted through the Ministry of Education or a registered private school with formal HR structures.
