About the Company
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) Western Diocese is a regional diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia, operating across western Namibia including areas such as Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, and the Erongo Region. Established as part of ELCIN's administrative structure, the Western Diocese oversees congregational activities, theological training, and community development programs within its jurisdiction. The diocese manages churches, schools, and social services while maintaining the Lutheran tradition that has deep historical roots in Namibia dating back to Finnish missionary work in the 19th century. It functions under the broader ELCIN umbrella, which is one of the largest Christian denominations in Namibia, while maintaining distinct regional governance for its western territory.

Most employers require a Grade 12 certificate with passes in English and Mathematics. A diploma or certificate in Secretarial Studies, Office Administration, or Business Management from institutions like NIMT, UNAM, or IUM strengthens your application. Computer literacy, especially in Microsoft Office, is typically essential.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Receptionist / Secretary at a Namibian church diocese?
You will manage incoming calls, schedule appointments, and maintain filing systems for clergy and administrative staff. Drafting correspondence, taking minutes at meetings, and handling petty cash are common duties. You may also assist with coordinating church events and managing visitor relations.
How does workplace culture differ in Namibian church organizations compared to private companies?
Church workplaces often emphasize community service, respect for hierarchy, and alignment with Christian values. Dress codes tend to be modest and professional, and flexibility around religious holidays like Easter and Christmas is expected. Relationships are often more personal, with staff frequently participating in church activities.
What benefits can I expect as a full-time Receptionist / Secretary in Namibia?
Standard benefits typically include annual leave of 18-24 days, sick leave, and public holidays as per Namibian labour law. Some church organizations offer medical aid contributions and pension schemes, though this varies by employer. Housing or transport allowances are sometimes provided but are not guaranteed.
