Prosecutor-General of Namibia

The Judicial Service Commission hereby invites suitably qualified and experienced persons to submit applications to be considered for possible appointment to the position of Prosecutor-General of Namibia.

The requirements for the position are the following:

Constitutional requirement

• Legal qualifications that would entitle the applicant to practise in all courts of Namibia (these are stipulated in the Legal Practitioners Act, 1995);
• The applicant should, by virtue of his or her experience, conscientiousness and integrity be a fit and proper person to be entrusted with the responsibilities of the Office of the Prosecutor-General;

Additional requirements

• 15 years of admission as a legal practitioner;
• Proven track record of being able to act with integrity and impartiality;
• Must be prepared to personally prosecute or lead appeals in appropriate cases;
• Knowledge of the Namibian socio-economic context and government programme;

Other selection criteria that will be taken into account:

• Experience in criminal litigation or other experience in the field of criminal justice;
• Breadth of legal knowledge, particularly in areas that interface with criminal law, such as company law, POCA, international cooperation in criminal matters, e.g. extradition and human rights law;
• Demonstrable leadership qualities;
• A clear vision to improve the criminal justice system.

Suitable persons are encouraged to submit

• Certified copies of their curriculum vitae (candidates are requested not to name a serving judge or member of the JSC as a reference) and;
• two recent letters of recommendation/testimonials by respected members of the community in good standing;
• a completed questionnaire (available from the Secretariat of the Judicial Service Commission);
