PROJECT OFFICER – University of Namibia

A bachelor’s degree in project management, business administration, social sciences, or a related field is usually required; many employers prefer candidates with a postgraduate qualification or PRINCE2/Foundation-level certification. Relevant experience in academic or public-sector projects in Namibia is highly valued, and familiarity with UNAM’s mandate and national development frameworks (e.g., NDP5) strengthens applications.

Daily tasks include coordinating project timelines with academic and administrative units, preparing progress reports for donors or internal stakeholders, and facilitating stakeholder meetings—often across campuses in Windhoek, Oshakati, or Rundu. You’ll frequently liaise with Namibian government departments, NGOs, and community partners, requiring strong communication in English and often local languages like Oshiwambo or Otjiherero.

Respect for hierarchy and consensus-driven decision-making are central; timely reporting and relationship-building with senior academics and community elders are expected. Punctuality is valued, but flexibility around communal responsibilities (e.g., funerals or traditional events) is commonly accommodated, provided advance notice and proper delegation are observed.

With proven success, officers may advance to Senior Project Officer, Programme Manager, or roles in UNAM’s Directorate of Research and Innovation or Institutional Planning. Further growth often involves pursuing a master’s degree locally (e.g., at UNAM or NUST) or gaining donor-funded project leadership experience aligned with national priorities like Vision 2030 or Harambee Prosperity Plan II.
