Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications are typically required for a Planning Clerk role in Namibia's logistics sector?
A National Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field from a Namibian institution (e.g., NUST or UNAM) is commonly expected. Relevant short courses — such as those offered by the Namibian Institute of Logistics (NIL) or CILT Namibia — strengthen applications, especially if they cover transport planning, inventory control, or ERP systems like SAP or Oracle.
What does a typical day look like for a Planning Clerk working at a port or terminal in Namibia?
You’ll coordinate container movements, update scheduling systems, liaise with shipping lines and truckers, and prepare daily operational reports for supervisors. Tasks often include verifying import/export documentation against customs requirements, managing berth and yard allocation data, and responding to real-time disruptions — all while adhering to Namibian Port Authority (Namport) regulations and terminal SOPs.
How does workplace culture and professional expectations differ for this role in Namibia compared to other countries?
Namibian logistics workplaces value respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and clear communication — especially when coordinating across diverse language groups (e.g., English, Oshiwambo, Afrikaans). Team collaboration is emphasised, but decision-making authority usually rests with senior planners or operations managers; junior clerks are expected to proactively flag issues without overstepping delegated responsibilities.
What realistic career progression paths exist after completing a 6-month FTC as a Planning Clerk in Namibia?
Strong performers may be considered for permanent roles as Planning Officers or Junior Operations Coordinators within the same terminal or at other Namport-affiliated entities. With additional experience and certifications (e.g., CILT Level 3 or NIL’s Advanced Logistics Certificate), progression to roles like Logistics Supervisor or Terminal Planner — often requiring 2–3 years’ local experience — is common in the Namibian logistics sector.
What standard benefits can I expect from a reputable employer like Terminal Investment Namibia for this fixed-term role?
Most established employers in Namibia offer statutory benefits including 21 days’ annual leave, sick leave under the Labour Act, and mandatory NAPWU pension contributions. Medical aid is often provided — either through a group scheme (e.g., Discovery Health Namibia or Medshield) or a cash allowance — though coverage level depends on the employer’s policy and contract duration.
How should I apply, and what do Namibian employers specifically look for in candidates for this role?
Apply via the official company portal or email with a Namibian-style CV (including ID number, contact details, and referees) and a concise cover letter highlighting local logistics exposure — e.g., internships at Walvis Bay Port, experience with Namibian customs documentation (e.g., SARS/NRA forms), or familiarity with road freight regulations. Employers prioritise accuracy, system literacy (especially Excel and basic ERP navigation), and evidence of reliability — often verified through reference checks with prior Namibian employers.
