PHARMACIST ASSISTANT GRADE 10 – Oshana Regional Council, Directorate of Health and Social Services

You typically need a Grade 10 certificate as a minimum, though many employers prefer candidates with a Pharmacist Assistant qualification from a recognized Namibian institution such as the University of Namibia or a vocational training center. Registration with the Namibia Pharmacy Council is usually required before you can practice. Some positions may also require basic computer literacy and proficiency in English and Afrikaans.

You will assist the pharmacist with dispensing medications, managing stock levels, and labeling prescription containers accurately. Customer service duties include receiving prescriptions, answering basic health-related queries, and directing complex questions to the pharmacist. You will also handle administrative tasks like record-keeping and maintaining cleanliness in the dispensary area.

Namibian employers generally emphasize respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and strong interpersonal skills due to the close-knit community nature of many towns. You may be expected to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays, especially in retail pharmacy settings. Building trust with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds is highly valued, and Afrikaans is commonly used alongside English in many regions.

With experience and further study, you can advance to Pharmacist Assistant Grade 12 or pursue a Bachelor of Pharmacy to become a fully qualified pharmacist. Some assistants move into supervisory roles, pharmacy management, or specialized areas like hospital pharmacy. Continuous professional development through the Namibia Pharmacy Council is essential for advancing your registration status.

Benefits vary by employer but often include annual leave as prescribed by Namibian labor law, medical aid contributions, and pension fund membership through institutions like the Government Institutions Pension Fund or private schemes. Larger employers such as hospital groups and retail pharmacy chains tend to offer more comprehensive packages. Smaller independent pharmacies may offer fewer formal benefits but sometimes provide housing allowances in rural areas.

Apply directly to pharmacy chains, private hospitals, and the Ministry of Health and Social Services, which advertises positions in local newspapers and on government portals. Employers prioritize candidates with proven reliability, strong communication skills, and relevant practical experience or internships. Ensure your Namibia Pharmacy Council registration is current or in progress, and highlight any community pharmacy exposure or customer service experience in your application.
