Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree or a relevant undergraduate degree plus a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), both accredited by the Namibian Qualifications Authority (NQA). Registration with the Teaching Council of Namibia (TCN) is mandatory before appointment, and subject-specific competence (e.g., Mathematics, Science, or English) must align with the school’s curriculum needs.

Teachers deliver lessons according to the Namibian National Curriculum, prepare lesson plans and assessments, mark learner work, and participate in extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs. They also attend staff meetings, engage in school-based in-service training, and collaborate with parents and the School Board as required under the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture guidelines.

Namibian schools emphasise respect for authority, punctuality, and strong community engagement — teachers are expected to maintain close ties with learners’ families and contribute to school development planning. Dress code is formal or semi-formal, and adherence to the TCN Code of Conduct and national education policies is strictly monitored by school management and the regional education office.

Teachers may progress from Classroom Teacher to Senior Teacher, then to Head of Department, Deputy Principal, and eventually Principal — all requiring additional qualifications (e.g., Diploma in Educational Management) and approval by the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture. Promotion depends on performance appraisals, years of service, and availability of posts within the public education system.

Permanent teachers are covered under the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and entitled to 21 days annual leave, 10 days sick leave per year, and maternity/paternity leave as per the Labour Act and Public Service Regulations. Medical aid is not automatically provided but teachers may join the Government Health Insurance Scheme (GHIS) voluntarily, and some schools facilitate group schemes through approved providers.
