You typically need a Grade 12 certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science, plus a relevant diploma or certificate in Surveying, Mining Engineering, or Geomatics from institutions like NUST or NIMT. Some employers also require a valid driver's license and medical fitness certification for mine work.

Daily tasks include conducting underground and surface surveys, maintaining survey instruments, recording accurate measurements for mine planning, and collaborating with geologists and engineers to ensure safe extraction boundaries. You will also update mine plans and ensure compliance with the Namibian Minerals Act and safety regulations.

Most Namibian mining operations run on rotational shift systems, often 2 weeks on and 1 week off or similar FIFO-style arrangements, with accommodation provided in mine villages near Swakopmund or on-site. Punctuality, strict adherence to safety protocols, and respect for hierarchical reporting structures are deeply valued in Namibian mining culture.

With experience and further qualifications, you can advance to Senior Surveyor, Mine Surveyor, or Survey Coordinator roles, with some progressing to Mine Planning or Geomatics Management positions.
