Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications are typically needed for a Motorman & AB Deck/Engine role in Namibia, especially for offshore or diving support vessels?
You would typically need a valid Seafarer's Medical Certificate, STCW endorsements for Motorman, AB Deck, and basic safety training (e.g., STCW A-VI/1). Practical experience in engine room operations and general deck duties on maritime vessels is also crucial. Additional certifications like diving support familiarisation or specific equipment operation might be advantageous for this role.
What are the common day-to-day responsibilities for a Motorman & AB Deck/Engine working on a vessel supporting engineering and diving operations in Namibia?
Responsibilities include performing routine maintenance and watchkeeping in the engine room, assisting with deck operations like mooring and cargo handling, and maintaining various vessel machinery. You will also support diving teams with equipment preparation, deployment, and recovery, ensuring all safety protocols are strictly followed. This dual role requires versatility and readiness for both engine and deck duties.
What are the typical work culture and expectations for marine crew, like a Motorman & AB Deck/Engine, operating in Namibia's maritime industry?
The work culture in Namibia's maritime sector emphasizes strict adherence to international safety regulations and company protocols, with a strong focus on teamwork and discipline. Expect demanding shift work, often involving long periods offshore, and a commitment to maintaining a high standard of operational readiness. Respect for hierarchy and open communication are also highly valued traits.
What are the realistic career progression paths for a Motorman & AB Deck/Engine in the Namibian maritime and offshore industry?
From this dual role, you can progress towards more specialized positions such as Oiler, Fitter, or potentially higher deck ranks like Bosun, given further training and experience. With continued professional development and further STCW certifications, you could also pursue officer roles within the engineering or deck departments. Experience gained in diving support further opens doors in specialized offshore operations.
What typical benefits packages can a Motorman & AB Deck/Engine expect from employers in Namibia's marine industry?
Typical benefits usually include standard employment entitlements such as paid annual leave and sick leave, adhering to Namibian labour laws and maritime regulations. Many employers also provide medical aid contributions, pension or provident fund schemes, and often life or disability insurance, especially for offshore roles. The specifics can vary significantly between companies and based on the employment contract.

Employers seek candidates with strong practical experience in both engine room maintenance and deck operations, coupled with up-to-date STCW certifications and a clean safety record. Emphasize your adaptability, teamwork skills, and any experience with diving support operations or relevant vessel types in your CV and cover letter. Demonstrating a proactive attitude towards safety and continuous learning will also be highly regarded.
