Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications are required to apply for Medical Officer Grade 5 at a public hospital like St. Mary's Hospital Rehoboth?
Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree registered with the Namibian Medical and Dental Council (NMDC). Completion of the mandatory two-year internship in a Ministry of Health and Social Services (MOHSS)-accredited facility is also required, along with current NMDC registration and a valid practicing certificate.
What does a typical day look like for a Medical Officer Grade 5 working at a regional hospital in Namibia?
Daily duties include outpatient consultations, ward rounds, emergency triage, antenatal care, minor procedures, and supervision of clinical officers and nurses. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams and often manage high patient volumes with limited specialist backup, especially in rural or semi-rural settings like Rehoboth.
How does the work culture and professional expectations differ for medical officers in Namibian public hospitals compared to other countries?
Namibian public hospitals emphasise adaptability, resourcefulness, and strong community engagement due to infrastructure and staffing constraints. Respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and adherence to MOHSS protocols — including accurate documentation in the national eHealth system — are consistently expected across facilities like St. Mary’s.
What career progression opportunities exist for a Medical Officer Grade 5 in the Namibian public health system?
Promotion to Grade 6 typically follows 3–5 years of service, successful performance reviews, and completion of postgraduate diplomas (e.g., in Family Medicine or Public Health) accredited by the University of Namibia or recognised international bodies. Further advancement may lead to specialist training pathways or managerial roles such as Clinical Coordinator or District Health Officer.
What benefits — such as leave, medical aid, and pension — are typically offered to Medical Officers in Namibian public hospitals?
Medical Officers employed by MOHSS receive 21 days of annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per government regulations. They are automatically enrolled in the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and may access subsidised medical aid through the Government Medical Aid Scheme (GMAS), subject to contribution requirements.
How do I apply for this role, and what do Namibian employers specifically look for beyond qualifications?
Applications are submitted via the MOHSS Central Recruitment Unit or advertised vacancies on the official MOHSS website and local newspapers; unsolicited CVs are not accepted. Employers prioritise evidence of rural service experience, cultural competence in multilingual settings (e.g., Afrikaans, Otjiherero, English), and demonstrated commitment to public health ethics and teamwork in resource-limited environments.
