Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree registered with the Namibian Medical and Dental Council (NMDC). Completion of the mandatory two-year internship in a Ministry of Health and Social Services (MOHSS)-accredited facility is also required, along with current NMDC registration and a valid practicing certificate.

Daily duties include outpatient consultations, ward rounds, emergency triage, antenatal care, minor procedures, and supervision of clinical officers and nurses. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams and often manage high patient volumes with limited specialist backup, especially in rural or semi-rural settings like Rehoboth.

Namibian public hospitals emphasise adaptability, resourcefulness, and strong community engagement due to infrastructure and staffing constraints. Respect for hierarchy, punctuality, and adherence to MOHSS protocols — including accurate documentation in the national eHealth system — are consistently expected across facilities like St. Mary’s.

Promotion to Grade 6 typically follows 3–5 years of service, successful performance reviews, and completion of postgraduate diplomas (e.g., in Family Medicine or Public Health) accredited by the University of Namibia or recognised international bodies. Medical Officers employed by MOHSS receive 21 days of annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave per government regulations. They are automatically enrolled in the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) and may access subsidised medical aid through the Government Medical Aid Scheme (GMAS), subject to contribution requirements.
