Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a General Mechanic (L2) at Barloworld Equipment in Namibia?
Typically you need a Grade 10–12 certificate plus a trade qualification such as a Level 2–3 certificate or apprenticeship in diesel/mechanical fitting from a recognised institution like NTA-accredited training centres. A valid Code B/CE driver's licence and trade test certification are often required. Prior experience with heavy earthmoving equipment is a strong advantage.
What are the typical day-to-day duties of a General Mechanic L2?
You will perform servicing, repairs, and diagnostics on construction and mining equipment such as excavators, loaders, and dozers, following manufacturer procedures. Duties include engine, hydraulic, electrical, and undercarriage work, completing job cards accurately, and adhering to safety standards. Field breakdown support at mine sites may also be required.
What is the work culture like for mechanics in Namibia?
Namibian workshops emphasise strict adherence to occupational health and safety rules, punctuality, and teamwork across shifts. Employers value discipline, willingness to work at remote mine sites on rotation, and clear communication with supervisors. Continuous learning through OEM training is strongly encouraged.
What career growth can I expect as a General Mechanic L2?
You can progress from L2 to higher mechanic levels (L3/L4), then to Artisan, Foreman, Workshop Supervisor, or specialised technician roles with additional OEM certifications. Gaining trade test status and brand-specific training accelerates advancement. Many technicians move into field service or supervisory positions within a few years.
What benefits are typically offered to mechanics in Namibia?
Common benefits include annual leave, medical aid contributions, pension or provident fund membership, and sometimes housing or transport allowances, especially for site-based roles. Benefits vary by employer and contract type. Always confirm the full package during the offer stage.
How do I apply and what do employers look for?
Apply directly through Barloworld Equipment's careers portal or via Namibian job boards like Namibia Jobs Finder, attaching an updated CV, certified qualifications, and references. Employers look for proven technical competence, safety awareness, reliability, and willingness to work shifts or travel to sites. Tailor your CV to highlight hands-on equipment experience.
