HEAD GUIDE – Ongava Game Reserve

Candidates generally need advanced guiding qualifications, often equivalent to FGASA Level 2 or 3, specific Namibian guiding accreditations (e.g., NATH registered), and a valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP). Essential certifications also include advanced first aid and a firearms competency certificate where applicable for dangerous game areas.

A Head Guide is responsible for leading game drives and walks, managing and mentoring a team of junior guides, and ensuring exceptional guest experiences. This includes overseeing guide schedules, maintaining vehicle readiness, and actively contributing to guest satisfaction and operational excellence.

The work culture is often highly collaborative and team-oriented, demanding long hours and a flexible schedule due to the nature of hospitality and wildlife. Head Guides typically live on-site in remote locations, fostering a strong community feel among staff and requiring dedication to both guests and the environment.

Successful Head Guides can progress into Lodge Management, Operations Management, or even specialized Trainer roles within larger tourism groups or conservation organisations. There are also paths to become an independent consultant or develop niche guiding expertise, leveraging extensive field experience.
