DRIVING INSTRUCTOR – All Gears DRIVING SCHOOL

You must hold a valid Namibian driver’s licence for the vehicle class you intend to teach (e.g., Code 1 for motorcycles, Code 2 for light motor vehicles), with at least three years of unendorsed driving experience. Additionally, you need formal certification from the Road Transport Authority (RTA) as a registered Driving Instructor, which requires completing an RTA-accredited training course and passing both theory and practical assessments.

Your day usually involves conducting on-road lessons across Windhoek or regional towns, preparing lesson plans aligned with the Namibian Road Traffic Regulations, and maintaining accurate learner records for RTA compliance. You’ll also perform vehicle safety checks before each lesson and may assist with learner theory exam preparation using locally approved materials such as the RTA Learner’s Handbook.

Namibian employers value punctuality, strong interpersonal skills, and cultural sensitivity—especially when instructing learners from diverse language and educational backgrounds across regions like Oshana or Khomas. Instructors are expected to uphold high ethical standards, avoid informal cash payments outside official channels, and comply strictly with RTA reporting requirements for learner progress and incidents.

With experience and a clean RTA record, you can advance to senior instructor, trainer-of-trainers, or RTA-accredited assessor roles. Some instructors start their own RTA-registered driving schools after meeting minimum operational requirements, including facility approval and submission of business registration documents to the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade.

Full-time instructors at registered schools are entitled to statutory benefits under the Namibian Labour Act, including 22 days of paid annual leave, sick leave, and maternity/paternity leave. Medical aid and pension contributions depend on the employer’s policy and collective agreements, but many established schools offer voluntary medical aid schemes and contribute to the Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) if employed by a public entity—or private retirement funds for private-sector roles.

Submit your RTA Driving Instructor Certificate, valid Namibian driver’s licence, police clearance certificate, and CV to the school directly or via platforms like Careers.na or LinkedIn. Employers prioritise candidates with proven teaching ability, fluency in English plus at least one local language (e.g., Oshiwambo or Afrikaans), and evidence of safe driving history—verified through RTA endorsement checks and reference letters from previous employers or learners.
