Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications or certifications do I need to become a Diesel Mechanic (C2) at a Namibian mine?
You typically need a Grade 12 certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science, plus a formal diesel mechanic trade qualification from a recognized institution like NIMT or a TVET college. A valid driver's license and additional certifications such as a Namibian Chamber of Mines certificate or occupational health and safety training are often required.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Diesel Mechanic (C2) at Rosh Pinah Zinc?
You will diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy diesel equipment including haul trucks, excavators, and generators used in mining operations. Daily tasks include scheduled servicing, troubleshooting breakdowns, ordering parts, and completing maintenance logs to ensure compliance with safety standards.
How does the work culture and shift pattern typically look for diesel mechanics in Namibian mining?
Namibian mining operations often run on rotational shift systems including day and night shifts, with FIFO (fly-in-fly-out) or camp-based arrangements common for remote sites like Rosh Pinah. Employers expect strong teamwork, strict adherence to safety protocols, and readiness to work in harsh desert conditions.
What career progression opportunities exist for a Diesel Mechanic (C2) in the Namibian mining sector?
With experience, you can advance to Senior Diesel Mechanic, Maintenance Supervisor, or Workshop Manager roles. Further studies in engineering management or specialized certifications in automation and electric vehicle systems can open doors to technical specialist or engineering positions.

Standard benefits usually include medical aid contributions, pension or provident fund membership, annual leave, and sometimes housing or living-out allowances for remote site work. Many employers also provide protective clothing, meals during shifts, and transport to and from site.
How should I apply for a Diesel Mechanic position, and what do Namibian mining employers prioritize in candidates?
Apply through company career portals, mining recruitment agencies, or job platforms like Careers Namibia and My Namibia. Employers prioritize proven experience with heavy mining equipment, a strong safety record, Namibian citizenship or valid work permits, and willingness to relocate to remote operational areas.
