CORPORATE & COMMERCIAL LEGAL PRACTITIONER (3–8 YEARS) – Engling, Stritter and Partners

A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university is essential, followed by completion of the Law Society of Namibia's Practical Legal Training course and admission as a Legal Practitioner. Membership with the Law Society of Namibia is mandatory to practice. Additional certifications in corporate governance or commercial law from institutions like the Namibia Institute of Corporate Governance can strengthen your application.

You will draft and review commercial contracts, conduct due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, advise clients on corporate governance matters, and represent clients in negotiations and dispute resolutions. Research on Namibian company law, securities regulations, and compliance requirements forms a significant part of daily work. Client consultations and liaison with the Registrar of Companies and other regulatory bodies are also routine responsibilities.

Namibian law firms typically emphasize relationship-building with local business communities and government stakeholders, requiring strong interpersonal skills and cultural awareness. Hierarchical structures are common, with senior practitioners expecting deference and thorough preparation from junior staff. Work-life balance can be challenging during peak deal periods, though firms increasingly recognize the importance of retention through flexible arrangements.

With 3–8 years of experience, you may progress to Senior Associate, then Partner track depending on business development success and specialization depth. Alternative paths include in-house counsel roles at major Namibian corporations, particularly in mining, banking, or telecommunications sectors. Some practitioners transition to judicial appointment, academia, or establish independent boutique practices focused on niche commercial areas.
