Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications are typically required for a Chief Development Planner Grade 6 position in Namibia?
Most employers require a Master's degree in Urban Planning, Development Studies, Economics, or a related field, plus at least 8-10 years of relevant experience. Professional registration with the Namibia Council of Town and Regional Planners or similar bodies is often preferred. Some public sector roles may accept equivalent experience combined with specialized certifications in project management.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Chief Development Planner Grade 6?
You will oversee strategic development planning, coordinate multi-stakeholder projects, and ensure alignment with national development goals like NDP5 or Vision 2030. Daily tasks include reviewing planning proposals, managing junior planners, liaising with government ministries, and presenting to regional councils. You will also monitor project budgets and ensure compliance with environmental and land-use regulations.
How does workplace culture in Namibia affect someone in this senior planning role?
Namibian public and private sectors value hierarchical respect, so expect formal communication with senior officials and collaborative decision-making with traditional authorities in communal areas. Punctuality is important, though flexibility is needed when engaging rural stakeholders. Building personal relationships and understanding local customs are essential for effective stakeholder engagement.
What career progression opportunities exist after reaching Chief Development Planner Grade 6?
Progression typically moves to Director or Permanent Secretary level in government, or to Executive Planning roles in consulting firms and international development organizations. Some planners transition into academia or policy advisory positions with bodies like the National Planning Commission. Specializing in climate adaptation planning or green hydrogen projects is increasingly valuable given Namibia's emerging economic priorities.
What benefits are commonly included in full-time Chief Development Planner positions in Namibia?
Public sector roles typically include pension contributions through GIPF, medical aid subsidies, and generous annual leave of 30 days or more. Private sector and NGO positions may offer performance bonuses, relocation allowances, and professional development funding. All full-time positions must comply with Namibian labor law regarding maternity leave and overtime compensation.
What do Namibian employers specifically look for when hiring for this grade level?
Employers prioritize proven experience with national development frameworks, strong report-writing skills in English, and demonstrated ability to manage diverse teams across Namibia's vast geography. Familiarity with GIS tools, knowledge of the Regional Councils Act, and experience with donor-funded projects are significant advantages. Applications should emphasize quantifiable achievements and include verifiable references from senior government or international organization contacts.
