How to Apply
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become a cashier in Namibia?
Most employers require at least a Grade 10 or Grade 12 (NSSCO) certificate, with Mathematics being an advantage. A certificate in Retail Management, Bookkeeping, or Basic Accounting from a Namibian institution like NIPAM or a TVET college can strengthen your application. Prior experience handling cash is often valued more than formal qualifications.
What are the typical day-to-day duties of a cashier in Namibian retail stores?
You will scan and process customer purchases, handle cash and card payments via POS systems, issue receipts, and balance your till at the start and end of shifts. You may also assist with packing shelves, greeting customers, and resolving simple queries. Accuracy and honesty with cash handling are the most important expectations.
What work culture and expectations should I know about as a cashier in Namibia?
Punctuality is highly valued, as retail shifts depend on reliable staff for opening and closing tills. Employers expect neat appearance, friendly customer service, and honesty, since theft or cash discrepancies are treated very seriously. Many retail outlets operate weekends and public holidays, so shift flexibility is usually required.
What career growth can I expect from starting as a cashier?
Cashiers often progress to senior cashier, shift supervisor, or floor supervisor roles after gaining experience. With further study, such as a diploma in Retail Management or Business Administration through institutions like IUM, NUST, or distance learning providers, you can move into store management. Demonstrating reliability and leadership on the shop floor is key to promotion.
What benefits are typically offered to cashiers in Namibia?
Common benefits include paid annual leave, sick leave under the Labour Act, and contributions to social security through the Social Security Commission. Larger retailers may offer medical aid schemes, pension or provident fund contributions, and staff discounts. Benefits vary by employer, so it's best to ask during the interview process.
How do I apply for a cashier position and what do employers look for?
Apply directly at store offices, through company websites, or via Namibian job portals and Facebook job groups, submitting a concise CV with references. Employers look for trustworthiness, basic numeracy, good communication skills in English (and ideally local languages), and availability for flexible shifts. Be prepared for a short interview and possibly a basic maths or honesty assessment.
