Professional certifications such as CIPS are highly valued for international buying roles. Strong negotiation and supplier management experience is usually expected.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of a Local & International Buyer?
You would source and evaluate local and overseas suppliers, raise purchase orders, negotiate prices and terms, and track deliveries. The role also involves managing import documentation, customs clearance coordination, and maintaining stock levels. Regular communication with suppliers, freight forwarders, and internal departments is a daily requirement.
What is the work culture like for procurement professionals in Namibia?
Namibian workplaces generally value professionalism, punctuality, and clear written communication, with English as the main business language. Buyers are expected to maintain high ethical standards, as procurement is closely scrutinised for transparency and compliance. Building long-term relationships with both local BEE-compliant suppliers and international vendors is important.
What career growth can I expect in this field?
Buyers typically progress to Senior Buyer, Category Manager, Procurement Manager, and eventually Head of Supply Chain roles. Gaining CIPS accreditation and experience with import/export processes significantly speeds up advancement. Moving between industries such as mining, retail, fishing, and manufacturing is common and broadens opportunities.
What benefits are usually offered to buyers in Namibia?
