Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications do I need to become an AV Technician in Namibia?
Most employers look for a certificate or diploma in electronics, electrical engineering, or audio-visual technology from an institution like NUST or a TVET college. Practical experience with sound systems, projectors, and video equipment is often valued as much as formal qualifications. Some employers also accept candidates with strong technical backgrounds who can demonstrate hands-on skills.
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of an AV Technician?
You can expect to set up, operate, and maintain audio-visual equipment such as PA systems, projectors, mixers, and video conferencing tools. The role often involves supporting events, meetings, conferences, and installations, plus troubleshooting technical faults on the spot. Routine testing, cabling, and equipment inventory management are also common tasks.
What certifications would strengthen my application in Namibia?
Certifications from manufacturers like Crestron, Extron, Dante, or AVIXA (such as CTS) are highly regarded by Namibian employers. A valid Code B driver's licence is often expected since technicians frequently travel to client sites or event venues. Basic electrical safety training is also a plus.
What benefits are typically offered to AV Technicians in Namibia?
Common benefits include annual leave, sick leave, medical aid contributions, and pension fund participation, depending on the employer's policies. Some companies also provide allowances for travel or overtime when supporting events outside normal hours. Benefits vary by employer, so it is best to confirm details during the interview process.
What career growth can I expect as an AV Technician?
With experience, you can progress to senior technician, AV systems engineer, or installation/project supervisor roles. Some technicians move into related fields like broadcast engineering, IT networking, or event production management. Continuous upskilling in new AV technologies significantly improves advancement opportunities.
How do I apply for this role and what do Namibian employers look for?
Prepare a CV highlighting your technical experience with AV equipment, relevant qualifications, and any event or installation work you have done. Employers typically value reliability, problem-solving under pressure, good communication skills, and willingness to work flexible hours including weekends for events.
