Artisan: Rigger
Opportunity | Duty Description
~~MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To effectively perform technical skilled rigging tasks in accordance with set standards to achieve optimum safety when lifting and moving heavy loads and maintaining and repairing lifting equipment / machinery and structures.
Key Performance Areas:
- Performs skilled technical work within the parameters of the trade (i.e. rigging of structures, equipment / machinery) in accordance with set standards, procedures and specifications, in area of responsibility.
- Aligns, levels and anchors machinery and equipment.
- Attaches pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures such as beams, ceilings and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps.
- Controls movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chain falls, gin poles, gallows frames, and other equipment.
- Lifts, transports and repositions heavy loads.
- Signals or verbally directs employees engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure safety of workers and materials.
- Examines objects to be moved, estimates their size, shape and weight of load and selects / decides on the type of correct lifting equipment necessary to move them.
- Manipulates rigging lines, hoists and pulling gear to move or support materials such as heavy equipment.
- Tilts, dips and turns suspended loads to maneuver over, under, and/or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
- Installs ground rigging for yarding lines, attaches chokers to logs and then to the lines.
- Selects gear such as cables, pulleys and winches, according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules.
- Chooses or makes slinging equipment and attaches to load.
- Fabricates, sets up and repairs rigging, supporting structures, hoists and pulling gear, using hand and power tools.
- Positions / installs cranes and mobile crane booms, and increases the height of tower cranes.
- Splices ropes and cables to make slings and tackle to laid down standards.
- Tests rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
- Positioned temporary lifting devices if required, and installs cables, pulleys and other tackle.
- Establishes and maintains effective communication channels amongst staff.
- Performs any other additional / reasonable duties and / or tasks and overtime work when required.
- Ensures adequate care and correct use of tools in the section, and maintains workshop equipment where necessary.
- Ensures that the Engineering Foreman (Cranes) is kept informed of all work performed in the section by reporting on work orders/requests, possible causes, estimated life span of components/ parts, spares used, time taken and recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Schedules maintenance activities, by: ensuring that the required parts, tools and special tools are available during services and repairs as planned, in order that repair and maintenance work can be done in the shortest possible time.
- Provides proactive advice and guidance on the effective repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
- Creates opportunities for innovation and leads projects to meet innovative ideas.
- Inspects, maintains and services lifting equipment (e.g. pull lifts, chain block, etc).
- Dismantles and stores rigging equipment after use.
- Cleans and dresses machine surfaces and component parts.
- Keeps the Engineering Foreman (Cranes) fully informed of all work performed in area of responsibility, and timeously reports any deviations so that appropriate action can be taken.
- Analyses trends and implements continuous improvements.
- Plans for an adequate supply of materials, spares and components for use in the section, to minimize delays.
- Identifies and interprets best practice guidelines, plans and implements best practices within the team in area of responsibility.
Opportunity | Duty Requirement(s)
~~Requirements and experience:
- Grade 12 with recognized Trade Certificate / Diploma with 4 technical theoretical subjects on N3/L3 level as a Rigger.
- 5 years Post apprenticeship experience as a Rigger.
- High Angle Rescue experience.
- Working at Heights experience.
- Valid Code CE Driver’s License.
