Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications and certifications are typically required for an Accountant role at FNB Namibia?
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a Namibian university or equivalent accredited institution is usually required. Professional certification such as ACCA, CIMA, or SAICA (via the CA(SA) pathway) is highly valued, and many candidates pursue the Namibian Institute of Accountants (NIA) registration to meet local regulatory expectations.
What does a typical day look like for an Accountant at FNB Namibia?
Daily tasks include processing financial transactions, reconciling accounts, preparing monthly management reports, and supporting internal audits in line with Namibian Financial Reporting Standards (NRS) and IFRS. You’ll also interact with local departments such as Treasury and Compliance, and use core banking systems adapted for Namibia’s regulatory environment, including SARS VAT reporting requirements.
How would you describe the work culture and expectations for Accountants in Namibian banks like FNB?
FNB Namibia emphasises professionalism, integrity, and service excellence aligned with both FirstRand Group values and Namibian business norms. Punctuality, strong communication in English (and often Afrikaans or local languages), and adherence to local labour laws — including the Labour Act, 2007 — are expected, alongside responsiveness to client and regulatory deadlines specific to Namibia’s fiscal calendar.
What career progression opportunities exist for Accountants within FNB Namibia?
Entry-level Accountants may progress to Senior Accountant, then Finance Business Partner or Internal Audit roles, often supported by internal training and study leave for professional exams. Long-term growth can lead to managerial positions such as Finance Manager or Head of Finance, with pathways influenced by performance, NIA/SAICA membership status, and alignment with FirstRand’s leadership development frameworks in the Namibian context.
What benefits (leave, medical aid, pension, etc.) are commonly offered to Accountants at FNB Namibia?
Standard benefits include 21 days’ annual leave, sick leave as per the Namibian Labour Act, and access to a group medical aid scheme administered through a Namibian provider. A pension or retirement annuity plan is typically offered, often aligned with Namibia’s Pension Funds Act, and may include employer contributions compliant with local regulations.
How do I apply for an Accountant role at FNB Namibia, and what do recruiters specifically look for?
Applications must be submitted via FNB Namibia’s official careers portal — unsolicited CVs sent directly to branches are generally not considered. Recruiters prioritise candidates with Namibian work authorisation, relevant local experience (e.g., exposure to SARS compliance or Namibian GAAP), and evidence of ethical conduct, often verified through NIA registration or references from Namibian employers.
