You need a valid STCW II/1 certificate as a minimum, plus a Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) certificate from an accredited training provider. You will primarily monitor and operate dynamic positioning systems during offshore operations such as supply runs, anchor handling, or subsea construction. You will also assist the Chief Officer with navigational watches, vessel stability calculations, and safety equipment maintenance. Accurate logkeeping and communication with offshore installations are essential daily tasks.

Namibian offshore operations often follow rotational schedules common in West Africa, typically 4 weeks on and 4 weeks off, though this varies by contract. Employers generally expect strong English proficiency and adaptability to multicultural crews, including West African and European nationals. Punctuality and strict adherence to safety protocols are non-negotiable given the regulatory environment.

With sea time and additional certifications, you can advance to Chief Officer and eventually Master on DP vessels. Specializing in advanced DP systems or subsea operations can open doors to offshore installation management roles. Some professionals transition into marine consultancy or training positions within regional maritime academies.

Contracts usually include medical aid coverage, pension or provident fund contributions, and paid annual leave calculated per days worked offshore. Travel to and from the vessel or heliport is typically employer-funded. Specific benefits vary by employer and contract type, so always review terms carefully before signing.
