You typically need a Grade 10 certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science, followed by a Boilermaker trade certificate from an accredited institution like Namibian Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) or a recognized TVET college. An apprenticeship of 3-4 years under a registered employer is mandatory to qualify for a Red Seal or equivalent trade test certification.

You will read and interpret technical drawings, fabricate and assemble metal structures, repair pressure vessels and tanks, and perform welding using various techniques. Daily tasks also include inspecting equipment for defects, maintaining safety standards, and collaborating with engineers on fabrication projects.

Namibian employers emphasize strict adherence to Mine Health and Safety Act regulations and often require shift work to accommodate mining or industrial operations. Punctuality, respect for hierarchy, and strong teamwork are highly valued, with many positions located in remote areas requiring FIFO or accommodation on site.

Further studies in Mechanical Engineering can open paths to Technician or Engineering roles, while some experienced Boilermakers establish their own fabrication businesses.
