Workshop Technician: Mechanical Engineering Workshop
Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree (NQF Level 7) in Mechanical Engineering with at least three (3) years
experience in industry/workshop. Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).
Knowledge and solid understanding of handling and maintaining mechanical equipment.
Competence to teach the following courses: Workshop Practice, Engineering Drawing and
Engineering Graphics. Ability to give practical training on the following machines: Conventional Lathe Machine; Milling Machine; CNC Lathe; Welding; Bench Fitting. Competence in the use of workshop equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain the Mechanical Workshop and its equipment; control and manage the inventory;
prepare practical classes and provide support to students during practical sessions; evaluate
the students’ performance during practical sessions; organise excursions; monitor the Work
Integrated Learning programme associated with the workshop; invigilate during practical
sessions/examinations and assist with the marking. Responsible for the Service, repairs and
maintenance of machines and equipment in the Mechanical Workshop. Perform any other
work-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Teach, assess, and develop curriculum, conduct community service, and administration. Supervise research (projects and/or thesis) at undergraduate levels;
conduct research and publish in accredited journals; source for research or project funding; establish professional networks with industry and universities
and partake in Department, Faculty, and/or University Committees.
